Yarn Storage
If your like me,you can't pass up a yarn sale.We have what is known as YAS,Yarn Acquisition Syndrome. The only bad side effect of this malady is how to store all that yarn!Below are a few suggestions that have helped me over the years. Remember, there is no cure for YAS,so you had best learn how to deal with it.As a matter of fact, this disease can lead to similiar afflictions, such as PAS(Pattern Acquisition Syndrome) and HAS(Hook Acquisition Syndrome).
Gallon-size zipper storage bags make great yarn holders. They store four 3-oz.skeins and keep the yarn clean. Punch a little hole in the end and you can use your skein without having to take it out of the bag. This is great for storing similiar colors or for scrap projects using more than one color. Make sure to get the freezer-style bags. They hold up better and the zipper is stronger.
Once all your skeins are in the zipper bags, you need a way to store them. As it turns out,the bags fit perfectly into these Sterilite containers. The containers are clear so you can see what colors you have. The top locks and has a handle so you can carry sixteen 3-oz. skeins of yarn at one time. That's 3 pounds of yarn!
If you have to "sneak" new yarn into the house("You already have yarn, why did you buy more?"),take your zipper bags and put them into a pretty pillowcase.Cut a coordinating fabric strip or ribbon and tie into a fancy bow.Or sew Velcro to the edges and close it up.Use it as a back-rest pillow and non-crocheters will never know you just feed your "addiction". *Pack similiar colors together in the same bag.Dark colors will rub off on light colors. *Do try to use up your leftovers in scrap charity projects or donate skeins to charity. *Take unwanted skeins and balls to thrift stores. They will get used. *Check out "bazaar" and "one-skein" project books. You will be amazed at all the small items you can make with very little yarn. *Put together a gift basket of leftover skeins,a "Learn to Crochet" book and 2-3 hooks.Pass on this great hobby.
Yarn as Home-Decor Go through your yarn stash, picking out colors that coordinate with your room decor.Roll the yarn loosely into balls. Fill a pretty basket or bowl with the yarn balls. Not only will it be obvious to visitors your favorite hobby, but it may inspire you to use your stash when you see it every day!
