4-Patch Granny Square-12"
This 12" square is made up of four 5 1/2" Granny Squares with a GS border and sc edging.I will use the colors in the square as references in the instructions,but use whatever colors you like.
You'll Need:
Each 5 1/2" square takes approximately 20 yards of worsted-weight yarn,with the final square added a little more."J" hook.

Note:Always leave at least 4" of yarn when fastening off to weave back and forth so your square won't unravel.

To Make:
Basic Granny Square
Rnd 1:Ch 4,sl st to 1st ch to form a loop.Ch 3,2 dc in loop(ch 2,3dc in loop)3 times.Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.Pull tail tight and weave it around the back side of the square.This side is the RIGHT side.This should measure about 1 7/8".
Rnd 2:Ch 1,turn.(sc in next ch-2 sp,ch 2).This counts as a beg dc.(2dc,ch 2,3dc)all in same sp.*Ch 1,(3dc,ch 2,3dc)all in next ch-2 sp.Rep from * 2 more times.Join with sl st to top of beg dc.This should measure approximately 3 1/8".
Rnd 3:Ch 1,turn.Work beg dc,2dc in next ch-1 sp.*Ch 1,(3dc,ch 2,3dc)in next ch-2 sp.Ch 1,3dc in next ch-1 sp.Rep from * 2 more times.Ch 1,(3dc,ch 2,3dc) in last ch-2 sp,ch 1.Join.This should measure approximately 4 1/4".
Rnd 4:Rep rnd 3 with (3dc,ch 1)in ch-1 sps and (3dc,ch 2,3dc,ch 1)in ch-2 sp.Your square should now be 5 1/2".

Note:For 6" exchange/charity square,work a rnd of sc around square.

4-Patch Square

Work 2 Navy squares.

Work Red square through Rnd 3.
Two-Side Joining
Rnd 4:Ch 1,turn.(beg dc,2dc) in next ch-1 sp.Ch 1,(3dc,ch 2,3dc) in next ch-2 sp,ch 1,(3dc,ch 1 in next ch-1 sp)2 more times.Holding Red sq and 1st Navy sq tog,with wrong sides facing,*in next ch-2 sp,3dc,ch 1,sl st in ch-2 sp of 1st Navy sq,ch 1,3dc in same ch-2 sp on Red sq.(Sl st in next ch-1 sp on 1st Navy sq,3dc in next ch-1 sp on Red sq)twice.Sl st in next ch-1 sp on 1st Navy sq.3dc in next ch-2 sp on Red sq.*Ch 1,sl st in next ch-2 sp on 1st Navy sq,sl st in ch-2 sp on 2nd Navy sq,ch 1.Rep from * to * for joining of 2nd Navy sq.Ch 1,(3dc,ch 1) in last ch-1 sp on Red sq.Join.Fasten off .Weave in ends.
Rep for joining White sq to both Navy sq.At the end of Rnd 4 on White sq,Do Not fasten off.

Rnd 1:Ch 1,turn(beg dc,2dc)in next ch-1 sp,ch 1,*dc in next ch-2 sp,dc in joining sl st,dc in next ch-2 sp,ch 1(3dc,ch 1 in next ch-1 sp)3 times,(3dc,ch 2,3dc)in next ch-2 sp,ch 1,(3dc,ch 1 in next ch-1 sp)3 times.Rep from * around.Join,fasten off.
Rnd 2:Join Red with sl st in any ch-1 sp.Sc in each ch-1 sp and dc around,with 3 sc in corner ch-2 sps.Fasten off,weave in ends.
