| February 21,2005 is my 15th anniversary of being on the road. When we started,we could have never imagined that it would be so many years, but we wouldn't change this lifestyle for anything.I get to be with my husband while getting paid to tour the country.I have learned alot over these years and look forward to many more miles of fun! If you are thinking of going on the road, below are a few tips that will make your time travelling more enjoyable. *Simplify -No makeup, glasses instead of contacts, wash & wear hairstyle. -Darker clothes that can all be washed together in durable fabrics.Pants with a bit of Lycra for comfort.Jazz up outfits with unique jewelry, hats, belts, etc. You can still look good and be comfortable without being sloppy. -Bring clothes you can layer. You may be in freezing weather one day and in sweltering heat 2 days later. -NO WHITE!!! *Meals -Try to make as many of your own meals as possible.Your body will love you for it.With an invertor(or generator if you're an owner/operator),microwave and electric skillet, you can make healthier, more satisfying meals that won't eatup your paycheck. You can get by with a plug-in cooler, but a small dorm-style refirgerator/freezer will give yo more options.Stockup at Walmart Supercenter(big parking lots)once a week, making sure to always have plenty of healthy convienence foods and water in case of long waits at the dock or weather emergencies. -If you must eat-out,stay away from truckstop restaurant buffets. You'll be tempted to eat until stuffed to "get your moneys worth" and the pounds will creep on(believe me,I learned that lesson,LOL!).Instead, take the time to make it special by having a "date night" once a week by dropping your trailer in a truckstop(ask for permission first!)and going to a nicer restaurant. *Stay busy -As beautiful as this country is,there will come a time when you will want to go in the bunk and do something else.Have as many different types of distractions as you can,so you won't get bored. #Hobbies-Of course, crochet is my favortie, but I have also done plastic canvas,cross-stitch,needlepoint and sewing. #Reading-I buy romance novels at thrift shops for 50cent-$1.When you're done reading, leave them in truckers lounges, break rooms for others to enjoy. #Internet-A laptop and internet connection(Sprint PCS card for constant access)will help you stay connected to the "real" world and allow you to meet new people. #Puzzle Books-Word search is good for mindlessness, but more complicated styles, with the addition of an electronic dictionary, will keep your mind active and learning. #Anything you like to do-out of the ordinary:coloring books and crayons, quadrille paper for designing your dream home, scrapbooking, etc. *Getting Along -With such a small space, you can't slam the door to another room if you have a disagreement.Talk plain and open, don't play head games("If he loved me,he would know what I want without asking").If you want to stop at an antique store you know that's on your route, give 1-2 days notice so it can be scheduled in. -Learn to entertain yourself. The driver has so much to keep his eye on,don't take it personally if you have to say something more than once before it's heard.Be helpful by learning to read a map. -It's still a job.He drives and fuels the truck.Keep the truck tidy and meals healthy.Make his job as easy as possible. *Have fun-Explore local attractions during your down time.Plan for a day off if you know you will be empty in a place you have always wanted to visit. |
